The College of Sciences is collecting resources to help our community members and others who have been affected by Hurricane Helene.
The College of Sciences is committed to supporting those affected by Hurricane Helene, including Sciences community members and their families who live and work in western North Carolina. This page will be updated regularly with resources and ways that our community can assist with hurricane relief efforts.
Guidance for Sciences Employees in Western NC
This guidance is intended to supplement information provided by local authorities and addresses topics specific to NC State employees in Western NC impacted by Hurricane Helene.
NC State-Sponsored Relief Funds
- The NC State Extension Disaster Relief Fund is helping our Extension staff on the ground in western North Carolina as they bring resources and supplies to residents.
- The VetMed Disaster Relief Fund helps supply CVM’s mobile unit, which is currently in western North Carolina to help small and large animals in need of rescue, medical attention and food.
- The Student Emergency Fund will be assisting students from western North Carolina with financial needs as they arise.
Relief Funds for Other UNC-System Universities
To help students, faculty and staff at UNC System schools Appalachian State, Western Carolina and UNC Asheville, donations can be made to three specific emergency funds.

Volunteer to Help
Many relief organizations welcome the help of volunteers, but they are urged to not travel to impacted areas without coordinating with local and state officials. In other words, do not self-deploy.

- Pack Essentials: If you are experiencing financial hardship, housing insecurity or food needs, Pack Essentials can provide support.
- Absence Verification: If you need assistance regarding class attendance, please review information about the absence verification process.
- Office of Student Life and Advocacy: We know this is a difficult time for many in our community. If you need additional assistance or someone to talk to, please contact student-life-advocacy@ncsu.edu.

- North Carolina Department of Public Safety: Answers questions about Hurricane Helene, including what to do if you cannot reach a loved one, need emergency rescue or want to track the situation in your area.
- American Red Cross: Offers disaster relief and support services.
- Disaster Assistance: Helps with housing, food and financial relief.
- Disaster Distress Helpline: Those dealing with the impacts of the hurricane can call 1-800-985-5990 for emotional support.
- Shelters: Find nearby shelters and other forms of emergency housing.
- Live Traffic Updates and Road Conditions: Check current conditions before traveling.
- North Carolina Emergency Management: Tracks local responses to the hurricane.
- Power Outages: Information on local outages and restoration times.
