NC State Faculty Headline Advances in High-Dimensional Statistical Learning Conference
The Advances in High-Dimensional Statistical Learning Conference was successfully held in late 2024 as the first of its kind under the recently signed memorandum of understanding between NC State and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB). The event marked a significant milestone in fostering research collaboration and knowledge exchange between leading global institutions.
The workshop attracted nearly 100 participants and featured speakers from NC State, multiple Indian Institutes of Technology, and the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia, thereby bringing together expertise from three different countries. Participants expressed glowing reviews about the workshop, highlighting the contemporary relevance of the topics and the rich insights gained from distinguished researchers.
The primary goal of the workshop was to explore the statistical challenges arising from the analysis of high-dimensional data, a topic of immense importance in modern science, engineering and economics. With the rapid growth of computational resources and advanced data collection techniques, the past decade has seen an explosion of large and complex datasets. This trend has spurred the development of innovative statistical methods, both classical and Bayesian, tailored for high-dimensional settings.
Through keynote lectures and technical sessions, the workshop provided an excellent platform for researchers to engage in discussions on the latest advances in high-dimensional data analysis. The event not only offered participants the opportunity to learn from internationally renowned scholars but also fostered connections for future research collaborations across institutions.
The successful completion of this workshop underscores the fruitful partnership between NC State and IITB and sets a promising precedent for future collaborative initiatives.

As part of the agreement between NC State and IITB, Sujit Ghosh, professor of statistics and one of the speakers at the conference, was awarded the prestigious VAIBHAV fellowship by the Department of Science and Technology of India.
The fellowship, awarded to just 17 researchers around the world, will facilitate Ghosh’s academic visits to IITB for next three years. He will collaborate with scientists in India to advance research on the use of machine learning methods for marine and earth sciences.
