Seven members of the College of Sciences community were recently recognized with 2022-23 NC State teaching, diversity and excellence awards, while the college as a whole was recognized for its equity and inclusion efforts.

The college won the Chancellor’s Creating Community Award for the Outstanding College/Unit in recognition of its commitment to the recruitment, retention and promotion of individuals of underrepresented populations.

Alina Duca, a teaching professor and the director of undergraduate programs in the Department of Mathematics, and Carla Fröhlich, a professor of physics, have been chosen as Alumni Association Distinguished Undergraduate Professors. The award — one of the highest honors for undergraduate teaching at NC State — is sponsored by the NC State Alumni Association and managed by the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost and the Office for Faculty Excellence. Duca and Fröhlich will hold the distinction for the duration of their faculty appointment at the university.

Recipients of this award become members of the Academy of Outstanding Teachers for the duration of their faculty appointment at NC State. He also received additional recognition with an Alumni Association Outstanding Teacher Award.

Karl Wegmann, an associate professor in the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, also won an Outstanding Teacher Award.

Jackie Hughes, an accounting technician in the Department of Chemistry, won the SHRA award at the College of Sciences Awards for Excellence Celebration, while Alan Porch, the business manager for the Department of Mathematics, won the EHRA award.
