Physicist Ade Receives NC State Holladay Medal

Harald Ade, Goodnight Innovation Distinguished Professor in the Department of Physics, has received the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence. The award, NC State’s highest honor in recognition of faculty achievement, was presented to Ade at the university’s Celebration of Faculty Excellence on May 1.

Ade is a decorated physicist who joined the NC State faculty in 1992. He has received international attention for his interdisciplinary work on understanding the physics of organic solar cells and light-emitting diodes, creating novel devices, and inventing and using new characterization methods with an emphasis on applications to organic devices.

Ade has authored or coauthored more than 290 scientific publications and delivered more than 250 invited research presentations. In 2017, he ranked among the top 150 researchers most cited in the field of materials science, according to Clarivate Analytics. In addition to holding his professorship in the Department of Physics, he is the director of the Organic and Carbon Electronics Laboratory.

NC State’s board of trustees established the Holladay Medal in 1992 in honor of the university’s first president. Each recipient has made outstanding contributions to the university in research, teaching, or extension and engagement.
