2014 Outstanding Young Alumnus: Steve McCall

The 2014 Outstanding Young Alumnus Award winner is Dr. Steve McCall. McCall received his BS in chemistry in 2000 from Francis Marion University in his hometown of Florence, SC. He began his graduate career at NC State under the direction of Dr. Daniel Comins and received his PhD in organic chemistry in 2007.

After some work in the private sector, McCall returned to NC State in 2008 as a lecturer in General Chemistry. He also worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Dr. Christian Melander and for Christian’s company, Agile Sciences. So McCall has seen NC State from the perspective of a student, a lecturer, a postdoc, and a team member at an NC State spinoff.

McCall began the next phase of his career in 2009 when he joined BASF in Research Triangle Park. In 2013, he moved to Limburgerhof, Germany, with BASF to further expand his professional experiences; he now holds the title of agricultural research scientist, a position that relies heavily upon his skills in project management, communication, critical thinking, data synthesis and creativity.

McCall has been incredibly supportive of the College. He has greatly expanded the College’s relationship with BASF, which hires many of our graduates. In fact, McCall helped organize and secure BASF funding for some departmental graduate recruiting events.
