Catherine Davis, an associate professor in the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, has been awarded the Nanne Weber Early Career Award from the American Geophysical Union (AGU).

The Weber Award is presented annually and recognizes significant contributions to paleoceanography and paleoclimatology research from honorees within 10 years of receiving their Ph.D. Notable contributions can include the awardee’s high research impact, innovative interdisciplinary work, educational accomplishments, such as mentoring, or positive societal impact.

The award is named for Nanne Weber, a leader in paleoclimate modeling and former editor of the journal Climate of the Past.

Davis is an oceanographer who studies the long-term effects of global climate on oceanographic environments. Her current research focus is on how oxygen and carbon content changes in open ocean environments in response to rapid climate change.

In 2025, Davis received a Sloan Research Fellowship in Earth system science. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis, in 2016, and joined the NC State faculty in 2021.

AGU was established in 1919 and is the world’s largest Earth and space science association. Davis and other AGU honorees will be recognized at the organization’s 2026 annual meeting in December in San Francisco.
