Using Statistics to Support Champions

Billy Fryer
Billy Fryer, junior statistics and Spanish double major.

College of Sciences students do extraordinary things everyday — and Billy Fryer is no exception.

The Columbiana, Alabama, native has found a way to combine his interest in sports and statistics inside and outside the classroom. Fryer, a junior Solomon Scholar double majoring in statistics and Spanish, is president of the Sports Analytics Club and a volunteer analyst for the women’s basketball team, one of the top teams in the nation.

As part of the Sports Analytics Club, Fryer had the opportunity to to help the NC State baseball team with some of their data analysis as they advanced to the College World Series last year.

And this past summer, he reached out to the women’s basketball team and offered up his analytics skills. The team agreed, and he has been helping them push ahead of their opponents with charts, graphs and videos. The team won the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season and tournament championships and earned a no. 1 seed in the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

Landing a gig with the women’s basketball team is just one example of Fryer finding opportunities and resources by simply asking. He has found that faculty and staff at NC State have been eager to help him succeed.

“Everyone wants to help you out. You just have to know to ask for it,” he said. “That’s something that I don’t know if I can find anywhere else.”
