Statistician Herle McGowan Named Associate Dean for Administration

Herle McGowan

Herle McGowan has been named the College of Sciences’ new associate dean for administration (ADA), effective June 1, 2025. McGowan is a longtime faculty member in the Department of Statistics and currently serves as chair of the University Faculty Senate.

As ADA, McGowan will be responsible for college operations, faculty affairs and resource management, duties that include facilities oversight and the ongoing implementation of the college’s strategic plan. She will also be the college’s primary contact with the faculty affairs units in the provost’s office, with the goal of improving research and teaching quality. McGowan will be a key member of the college Leadership Team.

McGowan joined the NC State faculty in 2009 and is currently a teaching professor. Since 2022, she has been chair of the faculty, a role that includes planning and running bi-weekly meetings of the Faculty Senate and its Executive Committee; managing issues of concern raised by faculty; and reporting to and meeting regularly with the provost and chancellor. She also represents the faculty on many university committees, including the Chancellor Search Advisory Committee, the University Budget Advisory Committee, the Council on the Status of Women and several awards committees. Her term as chair ends in June, after which she will begin her new role as the college’s ADA.

McGowan’s service experience at the college level is extensive, including serving as the lead Faculty Senator, co-chairing the Faculty Advisory Council and sitting on numerous college and departmental committees. Her many awards and honors include the university’s Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Award and Alumni Outstanding Teaching Award, as well as the Dennis Boos Citizenship Award from the Department of Statistics.

She received her bachelor’s degrees in statistics and economics from Rutgers University and her master’s degree and Ph.D. in statistics from the University of Michigan.
