Emily Hector, assistant professor in the Department of Statistics at NC State, has received a Faculty Early Career Development Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The award, also known as the NSF CAREER award, is one of the highest awards the foundation gives to young faculty in the sciences.
The five-year award will support Hector’s research project entitled “New data integration approaches for efficient and robust meta-estimation, model fusion and transfer learning.” The research aims to develop new methods for combining information from multiple datasets that have the potential to improve the robustness and generalizability of scientific findings.
Hector’s new approaches account for and leverage substantial differences between datasets, and should therefore be broadly applicable in medical, economic and social sciences. Among the objectives is a set of new tools to extract health insights from large electronic health records databases. The project will include a STEM education component that creates a data science teacher training program in underserved communities.
Hector received her Ph.D. in biostatistics from the University of Michigan. She serves as an associate editor for reproducibility at the Journal of the American Statistical Association.
