Starting Year Two

The College of Sciences began its second year in August by welcoming a strong freshman class to campus.

The College received freshman applications from nearly 3,300 students seeking admission to its undergraduate programs. More information about the incoming class:

  • The class has a weighted high school grade point average of 4.52.
  • The average SAT score was 1267. Six students had perfect scores on the math portion of the SAT, and six students had perfect critical reading scores.
  • 60 percent of the freshmen were in the top 10 percent of their high school classes, and 83 percent were in the top 20 percent.
  • The class hails from 74 of North Carolina’s 100 counties, as well as 27 other states and nine countries.
  • Students interested in majoring in the Biological Sciences entered the new Life Sciences First Year Program, in which students take a common set of first-year courses that prepare them for any of the life sciences programs across the College and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

The College of Sciences launched on July 1, 2013, bringing together NC State people and programs in the biological, mathematical and physical sciences. The new arrangement channeled NC State’s strengths in the basic sciences into a more comprehensive college dedicated to solving grand societal problems.

  • The College has about 3,700 graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Faculty and students are engaged in about 400 research projects in health and well-being, energy and the environment, safety and security, and other areas.
  • The College is one of the most research-intensive units at NC State, with $50 million in annual research expenditures.
