On December 12, PAMS and the College of Engineering celebrated the establishment of the Patricia A. and W. Donald Johnson Scholarship Endowment. The endowment provides critical funds to help the two colleges recruit and retain top students.

According to Dean Dan Solomon, PAMS will also use funds generated by the endowment to help enhance the college experience for worthy students.

“In our college, in particular, this endowment will help us provide experiential learning, service, and leadership opportunities as well as reward previous academic achievement,” Solomon said. “Recipients of this scholarship will leave NC State fully prepared to be leaders in their chosen fields and in their communities.”

Don Johnson earned a B.S. in applied mathematics in 1969. He went on to earn a masterĂ¢â‚¬™s and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from NC State’s College of Engineering before embarking on a long and successful career at DuPont. He is the 2006 recipient of the PAMS Distinguished Alumni Award.

Pat Johnson is also an NC State graduate, earning an M.S. in education in 1972. Pat was able to afford her tuition, in part, thanks to scholarship funds made available to the children of military veterans. In gratitude of that support – and in honor of the sacrifices made by military families everywhere – the Johnsons have stipulated that first preference for this scholarship be given to students whose parents have served or are serving in the military.
