Imhotep celebrates 20 years, 100 sessions, and thousands of inspired students

This October marks the 20th anniversary of Imhotep Academy, a year-round program of The Science House at NC State University that introduces traditionally underrepresented students in grades six through eight to science, mathematics and technology (STEM). This fall’s session of the academy, titled “Exploring the Dynamic Body through Bio-photonics,” also marks the 100th in its history.

Imhotep Academy is celebrating these milestones with a 20th Anniversary Symposium and Luncheon on Saturday, October 20, at the university’s Mckimmon Center from 11:30 a.m. 2 p.m. In addition, a “Friends of Imhotep” fundraising opportunity is being developed. Friends of Imhotep will support the academy’s strategic program goals, sponsor student scholarships and sustain quality STEM networks beyond the secondary school level.

“Year after year, Imhotep has served thousands of students who have gone onto graduate from college and secure jobs in a wide variety of STEM fields,” says academy director Pamela Gilchrist. “I am proud of this program and its continued success, and I look forward to ensuring another 20 years of Imhotep Academy.”

About Imhotep Academy and The Science House

Imhotep Academy is a program of The Science House, a national model for the interaction of university science departments and K-12 students and teachers. As the primary learning outreach program of NC State’s College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, our mission is to increase student enthusiasm for science and mathematics by partnering with teachers and schools to promote hands-on, inquiry-based learning.

Through its main office on Centennial Campus and five satellite offices throughout the state, The Science House links the research university to the needs of K-12 science and mathematics educators across North Carolina and beyond. Its programs are being replicated in other states, and our staff provides consultation to programs across the nation.
