Biological Sciences

Associate Research Professor Lindsay Zanno, who is also head of paleontology at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, and her collaborators confirmed that Nanotyrannus is a distinct species, not merely a teenage version of Tyrannosaurus rex.

The NC State community is mourning the loss of Assistant Professor Natalia Duque-Wilckens, who died on Nov. 12.

Meet three-time alumna Walda Powell, who was a professor of chemistry at Meredith College for 29 years before retiring in 2024. 

The Chemistry Graduate Student Association hosted this year’s National Chemistry Week celebration in Moore Square Park in November, bringing together hundreds of visitors for interactive activities and demonstrations.

Mathematics

Assistant Professor Laura Colmenarejo helped organize the Triangle Lectures in Combinatorics, a biannual one-day conference that has been held in and around the Research Triangle since 2010.

Assistant Professor Andrew Sageman-Furnas and his co-authors published an article in the prestigious Publications Mathématiques de l’IHÉS, confirming that two distinct, smooth tori with the same metric and mean curvature do exist.

Physics and Astronomy

A teaching lab in Woodson Hall will be named after the late John Risley — who joined the faculty of the department in 1976 — thanks to a gift from his wife, Dellaine. The Risleys created and supported various funds benefiting undergraduate and graduate students. 

Professor Hans Hallen and his collaborators used Resonance Raman imaging to confirm the preservation of hemoglobin in bone extracts from two dinosaurs.

Members of the Wolfpack community, including master’s student Amanda Baright, expressed gratitude for the people at NC State who have helped them along the way. 

Caldwell Fellow Armaan Raina, an undergraduate student, is growing both as a scientist and as a leader. Most recently, he cofounded Neurotech @ NC State, a club focused on applying technology to improve lives.
