Sherice Nivens had the desire. She had the smarts. She had the grades. She just didn’t have the money.

It was her junior year at NC State, and although she had already received several smaller scholarships and had taken a part-time job, she felt like she might need to drop out without more financial support.

Then something unexpected happened. Another scholarship she hadn’t counted on came through, providing her with enough money to stay in school. From that day forward, she vowed, as soon as she got the chance to give back to the college, she would.

Today Sherice is a cardiac specialty sales manager for Intuitive Surgical, which makes the da Vinci robotic device that helps doctors perform complex operations with just a few small bodily incisions.

She’s also a proud member of the Dean’s Circle.

“Without that funding, I might not have been able to graduate, and certainly not in a timely manner,” she says. “So ever since I got my first job, I’ve tried to give back every year.”
