"We wanted to go upriver and include Pittsboro in our understanding of PFAS exposure throughout the basin, as well as trying to focus on what the potential health effects could be," said Jane Hoppin, an environmental epidemiologist at North Carolina State University. Tooth Roots Reveal the Size of Fossil Primates

Ashley Deutsch, graduate student at North Carolina State University and first author of a paper on the research, wanted to know if it was possible to identify a primate's diet without having the actual tooth crowns at hand-by looking instead at the roots. "The tooth root transmits the force of the jaws into the food," says coauthor Adam Hartstone-Rose, professor of biological sciences at NC State.
