Use of Disinfectants Has Soared, Sparking New Examination of Ingredients

EcoWatch
Toxicology studies are pretty typically performed with high doses at first, before being extrapolated down to more realistic doses, according to Heather Patisaul, a biologist at North Carolina State University who studies toxicological effects of hormone-disrupting compounds. She was not involved in Hrubec’s studies.

NASA Ends Efforts to Deploy Mars InSight’s ‘Mole’

Scientific American
“Mars threw us a curveball with this soil,” says Paul Byrne, a planetary scientist at North Carolina State University, who is unaffiliated with the InSight mission. Consequently, “we’re still in the dark about the amount of heat coming from Mars’s deep interior to the surface.”

SC Flounder Are at Historically Low Levels, New Fishing Rules Could Save Them

The Post and Courier
John Godwin, who runs a lab at North Carolina State University, was one of several researchers who conducted studies on how temperatures affect the gender ratio of flounder. That’s important to the fishery because male flounder may never grow large enough to keep. One study of fish caught off North Carolina showed more males in the warmer south end of the state’s coast, and more females in the north. What’s less clear is how southern flounder and other species will adapt to these changes while they speed up, Godwin said.

Mysterious Flash May Help Solve Puzzle of Lightning Strikes on Venus

National Geographic
Earth’s clouds separate electrically charged water droplets and ice crystals through convection—when warmer clouds move up and cooler clouds sink down—leading to lightning. But it’s not clear how much vertical mixing happens in Venus’ clouds, says Paul Byrne, a planetary scientist at North Carolina State University. And Akatsuki can’t place the altitude of the flash, so if it was lightning, it could have struck from anywhere between the upper atmosphere and the main cloud deck tens of miles deeper.

The Steampunk Rover Concept That Could Help Explore Venus

Wired
Russia had more success with subsequent Venera probes, which sent back the only photos and measurements from the Venusian surface we have to this day. NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) have since orbited the planet next door, but no dedicated mission has launched to Venus from US soil in 31 years. That might soon change. “We are potentially at the cusp of a new era of Venus exploration,” says Paul Byrne, a planetary scientist at North Carolina State University and self-described Venus evangelist. Deeply knowledgeable and gregarious, Byrne is one of many researchers helping to lead the charge back to our sister world.
