Biological Sciences

Associate Professor Martha Burford Reiskind was part of a study that found that backyard mosquito sprays may be making insecticides less effective.

Chemistry

Waters Biosciences acquired NIRvana Sciences, a startup that originated in the lab of Glaxo Distinguished University Chair Jonathan Lindsey. NIRvana Sciences develops synthetic red and near-infrared fluorescent dyes for use in diagnostics and imaging.

Graduate student Shah Ishmam Mohtashim was part of a multidisciplinary team that developed a quantum computing method to identify the most important amino acid residues in proteins. 

Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences

Associate Professor Arianna Soldati was among 25 volcano scientists who contributed to a paper dispelling misconceptions and misinformation about volcanoes. 

Jenna Holt ’26 made the most of the opportunities NC State offered before earning a B.S. in geology, interning in the Geology and Petrology Research Lab at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and working in the lab of Associate Professor Ethan Hyland. 

Mathematics

Assistant Teaching Professor Jordan Snyder was part of a group of researchers who found that a genetic mutation associated with a rare group of blood cancers does not always result in development of the disease.

Associate Professor Mohammad Farazmand was part of a research team that developed Sparse Discrete Empirical Interpolation Method (S-DEIM), a new method to estimate sea surface temperatures from sparse data. S-DEIM is more accurate than other commonly used computational methods and the best-performing AI model. 

Physics and Astronomy

Assistant Professor Julio Belmonte uses computer simulations to understand how single cells develop into complex organisms.

Associate Professor Mary Elting was part of a team of researchers who discovered that Spirostomum ambiguum, an aquatic single-celled organism, can contract to one quarter of its body length faster than a human can blink. The discovery could lead to the development of faster artificial muscles and synthetic cellular machinery. 

Statistics

Lecturer Spencer Hamrick organized a visit to Caterpillar Inc. for students in his quality control course to see concepts from the classroom applied in a manufacturing environment.

On Aug. 28, the department hosted its inaugural Share Fair, an event in which graduate and undergraduate students who participated in summer internships shared their experiences and advice with other students seeking similar opportunities.
