Biological Sciences
Two department alumni, one current student and one incoming doctoral student have been awarded 2026 Graduate Research Fellowships from the National Science Foundation.
Professor Adam Hartstone-Rose took 13 students to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City to collect data as part of the Comparative Anatomy and Functional Morphology Research Experience. The excursion was funded by NC State’s Packways Recognized High-Impact Experiences.
Chemistry
Jonathan Lindsey, Glaxo Distinguished University Professor of Chemistry, was the corresponding author of research that successfully synthesized bacteriochlorophyll a, a photosynthetic pigment found in bacteria which absorbs infrared light.
Participants at the 2026 ChemEd Summit on March 13 worked together to integrate key knowledge, skills and abilities — including AI literacy, communication, project management, adaptability, interdisciplinarity and real-world problem solving — across the chemistry curriculum.
Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
Professor Lian Xie and a team of NC State researchers predicted that hurricane season this year will be in line with recent averages. They predicted 12-15 named storms, including six to nine hurricanes and two to three major hurricanes forming in the Atlantic basin.
A new geosciences course, MEA 591: Community Engagement for Geosciences, will teach students practical, applied skills for working with communities.
Mathematics
Associate Teaching Professor Stepan Paul created works of art to be displayed at the Maison Poincaré, a mathematics museum in Paris, France, as part of a trimester program at the Institut Henri Poincaré.
The department hosted its Math Circle on April 19, welcoming about 150 families from the local K-12 community to experience mathematics beyond the traditional classroom.
Physics and Astronomy
Professor Richard Longland co-authored a study reevaluating thermonuclear reaction rates, which power the models that explain how stars live, explode and create the elements. The reevaluation can affect our future understanding of the universe.
Distinguished University Professor Emeritus David Aspnes and colleagues developed a method to determine the effectiveness of filters that reduce “noise” in spectroscopy applications.
Statistics
Associate Professor Erin Schliep and her graduate student Adira Cohen are building statistical models to help NC State wildlife biologist Roland Kays predict the health of deer populations across various locations and conditions.
Three students were recognized with Distinguished Student Paper Awards at the 2026 International Biometric Society Eastern North American Region Spring Meeting.
