College Honors Inaugural Excellence in Advising Award Recipients

Wolf Plaza at NC State

Maggie Puryear, associate director of undergraduate programs in the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS), and Jeremiah Feducia, teaching professor in the Department of Chemistry, have been honored by the College of Sciences with the inaugural Excellence in Advising Awards.

The awards were established to honor outstanding advisors in the college and recognize the key role they play in ensuring the success of our undergraduate students. Academic advisors are often the first point of contact for students, helping them navigate their academic and personal lives.

Each year, one Excellence in Advising Award will be presented to a professional advisor, and another to a faculty member who excels at advising.

Edited excerpts from their nominations are below.

Maggie Puryear joined NC State advising staff in 2006. She provides one-on-one academic advising for all MEAS freshmen, transfer and prospective students, assistance that includes course planning and opportunities for enrichment. She is consistently praised for her helpfulness and responsiveness, and for offering sound advice on choosing classes and navigating transfer requirements. Students often laud her calm demeanor as an invaluable trait, and many credit her for helping them get their NC State academic careers off to strong starts.

Jeremiah Feducia came to NC State as a postdoctoral research associate in 2007 and joined the faculty the following year. Students praise him for his teaching and listening skills, as well as his disarming sense of humor. They also note that he encourages students to push themselves and “do hard things.” He’s earned a reputation for connecting with students on a personal level and encouraging them to not only learn chemistry, but to question what they learn, which has sparked many students’ passion for seeking knowledge.
