Honors and Awards
Sciences Faculty Recognized at Celebration of Faculty Excellence
NC State recognized 25 faculty members, including five from the College of Sciences, for their dedication to teaching, research and engagement during the 2020 Celebration of Faculty Excellence on Oct. 2.
The annual event, held virtually this year, honors faculty who have won prestigious state, national and international awards and created new knowledge and advancements in their respective disciplines.
The following Sciences faculty were honored during the ceremony:
- Lorena Bociu, an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics, was honored for receiving the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers beginning their independent careers.
- Wei-chen Chang, an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry, was honored for receiving a National Science Foundation Early Career Development (NSF CAREER) Award, one of NSF’s top awards for young science faculty.
- Jacqueline Krim, a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Physics, was honored for being elected an American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow.
- Maria Oliver-Hoyo, a professor in the Department of Chemistry and associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Sciences, was honored for receiving the Fulbright Scholar Award.
- Cynthia Vinzant, an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics, was honored for receiving a NSF Early Career Development Award, as well as the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, an award for scientists and scholars who demonstrate exceptional promise.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony, originally scheduled in May, was postponed until this fall.
2020 marks the ninth year of the Celebration of Faculty Excellence. In recognition of all honored faculty, the university lit the Talley Technology Tower red on Oct. 6.
